DUST TESTING & MONITORING
PERSONAL MONITORING EXPLAINED
Many application have proved that the LEV plant and equipment in a work place is designed and is functioning correctly and efficiently, but that does not give you as an employer any proof as to what dust and pollutants your workforce are exposed to within your working environment, you can only measure this by means of ‘Personal Monitoring’.
At HSE TESTING Ltd we carry out personal monitoring as a matter of course. Not only does it give you a true indication of atmospheric dust levels it also protects the employer against potential claims from employees who state you have damaged or ruined their health by employing them.
If I as an employee came to you and said that working for you has exposed them to high levels of dust and it’s ruined their health then you as an employer would have to defend that claim in a court of law. A judge would ask how much dust has the employee been exposed to and what is the recognised levels? could you tell them? The answer is of course no (claim successful).
If you carry out the annual COSHH -LEV test and carryout personal monitoring of your employees it’s the only recognised procedure to measure whether your employee is exposed to less than the current level of exposure(currently 5mg /m3) or not.
HOW IT WORKS
Your chosen employee would wear a piece of equipment that is calibrated to ‘breath’ at the same rate as adult lungs over a designated working period (usually 4-hours) A filter sample collects dust near the breathing zone on a filter. This filters is then sent to an independent hygienist laboratory that weigh the sample against set parameters and return the findings to us, this is then inserted into your report.
